How to get rid of junk in Kamloops

1. Sell it

Furniture, appliances and tools that still work and still look good are worth listing. Facebook Marketplace and Kijiji both reach Kamloops buyers. Take clear photos in daylight, measure large items, and price it at what you would actually accept.

Expect messages that go nowhere and buyers who do not show. If an item has sat for two weeks, drop the price or move to the next option.

2. Donate it

Kamloops has charity stores that take usable household goods, including the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, which resells furniture, appliances and building materials, and the Value Village community donation centre.

Call before you load anything. What each store accepts changes, and most will not take stained or broken items, and many do not take used mattresses.

3. Give it away

Things that work but will not sell, like an old desk or a bag of kids' toys, often go fast when they are free. Post them in a local free or "buy nothing" group, or list them as free on Marketplace, and set a pickup time so you are not waiting around.

4. Recycle it

A lot of what people think is garbage is free to recycle. At the City of Kamloops' Mission Flats Landfill, these are free:

• Scrap metal and major appliances, like washers, dryers and stoves
• Residential fridges, freezers and other appliances containing Freon
• Electronics, small appliances, power tools and large exercise equipment
• Batteries, propane tanks and light fixtures
• Cardboard, paper, plastic containers and metal cans
• Household paint, pesticides, flammable liquids and gasoline, in their original containers
• Tires off rims, in residential quantities

Outside Kamloops, the TNRD eco-depots recycle large appliances, scrap metal, electronics, tires and paint for free. For other chemicals, the City runs a Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Facility.

5. Take it to the dump

If you have a truck or a trailer and a strong back, a dump run is the cheapest way to get rid of real garbage. Kamloops has two City landfills:

• Mission Flats Landfill is open every day. Household garbage is $90 a tonne with a $10 minimum, plus $10 per couch and $20 per mattress (2026 rates). It takes cash, credit and debit.
• Barnhartvale Landfill is open Friday to Monday and charges by the load: $20 for a full car or SUV, $30 for a full pickup. It takes cash only.

6. Rent a bin

A bin makes sense when the job runs over several days and the pile keeps growing, like a renovation, a roof or a garage you are clearing a weekend at a time. 7. Have it hauled away

When it is heavy, awkward, or needs to be gone today, hire a junk removal crew. We bring the truck and the people, load everything from wherever it sits, and take it away in one visit. Stop it piling up again

• Keep a donation box by the door and drop it off when it is full.
• Deal with big items the week they stop being used, while they still sell.
• Before a move, sort first and pack second, so you are not paying to move things you will throw out.
